Acetyl-L-Carnitine Reduces Physical and Mental Fatigue and Improves Physical Function and Cognitive Status in the Elderly

In a placebo controlled study of 96 elderly people over 70 years of age, supplementation with acetyl-l-carnitine (ALC) was found to significantly reduce physical and mental fatigue and improve cognitive and physical function. Subjects were given ALC (2000 mg twice a day) or a placebo for 180 days. The ALC group experienced reductions in physical and mental fatigue and had improved functional status and cognitive functions. The results of this study suggest that supplementation with ALC may help to reduce fatigue in the elderly. Based on other research, this is not surprising, and especially if taken along with Ribose and CoEnzyme Q10, would also improve heart function in this population. I would only take 1000-1500 mg a day and not the higher dose used in this study.
