Doctors Want to Know More About Natural Treatments for Autism

Noting that 50 to 75% of children with autism are receiving complementary/alternative therapies, researchers at the University of Minnesota surveyed 539 U.S. primary care doctors, asking them if they were more likely to educate themselves about complementary alternative medicine (CAM) for children with autism compared with CAM for children with other chronic conditions. The answer was yes.

"In light of the high prevalence of CAM used to treat children with autism, it is important that physicians ask about CAM use in the context of routine primary care," said Allison Golnik, M.D., M.P.H., the study's author and an assistant professor in the University of Minnesota Medical School Department of Pediatrics.
