Parkinson’s Disease

BACKGROUND

Parkinson’s and Other Neurological Disorders

There are a host of devastating neurologic disorders that can improve significantly with natural therapies. These include:

Parkinson’s Disease

This movement disorder is characterized by tremor and stiff movement and is benefitted by medications that raise the neurotransmitter dopamine.

Multiple Sclerosis

This illness can be caused by a host of different triggers that then stimulate an immune response against your own nerves. It can initially cause transient loss of vision in 1 eye, or transient localized paralysis or loss of sensation (to where you can stick a needle into the area without feeling it). In some it is progressive and in others the attacks come and go.

ALS

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (also called Lou Gehrig’s Disease) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Symptoms include muscle weakness, especially involving the arms and legs, speech, swallowing or breathing.

TREATMENT

There are a host of devastating neurologic disorders that can improve significantly with natural therapies.

IF YOU HAVE PARKINSON'S DISEASE:

This movement disorder is characterized by tremor and stiff movement and is benefitted by medications that raise the neurotransmitter dopamine.

Recommended Supplements

Magnesium

Intravenous treatments with magnesium (which decreases muscle spasticity) and glutathione (an antioxidant which protects brain tissue) can result in immediate and dramatic improvement. Overall nutritional support by mouth can help maintain improved function over time.

Multi-nutrient powder

Take a good multi-nutrient powder along with the supplement NADH 10 mg under the tongue (or at least 45 minutes before eating if using the tablets) daily.

IF YOU HAVE MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS:

This illness can be caused by a host of different triggers that then stimulate an immune response against your own nerves. Some standard treatments (such as COP 1 or Copolymer 1) are worthwhile. Others, such as interferon, may help but have a lot of side effects.

Therapies & Advice

Holistic approaches

While deciding on standard therapy, try adding holistic approaches. These recognize that a number of viral and antibiotic sensitive infections that cannot be readily detected on standard testing may trigger the MS. Do a trial of antivirals and antibiotics empirically to see if they help. In a study in which the antibiotic doxycycline (the same antibiotic given to kids for years to treat acne) was added to interferon, the antibiotic improved the interferon’s effectiveness.

Detoxification for heavy metals

Detoxification for heavy metals is also reasonable.

Recommended Supplements

Vitamin D

Take 4,000 units of vitamin D daily, as low vitamin D is likely a major contributor to MS.

Estriol

The bioidentical estrogen Estriol (8 mg a day — a level mimicking pregnancy) resulted in marked improvements in symptoms and MRI scans in one study (although symptoms recurred after stopping treatment).

IF YOU HAVE ALS:

This severe illness may also improve with antivirals (though antibiotics were not helpful here).

Recommended Supplements

Lipoic acid

Lipoic acid 300 mg 2x day to protect nerve function.

Multi-nutrient powder

Take a good multi-nutrient powder (see Energy Revitalization System) along a B complex to supply many high dose antioxidants (including increasing your glutathione production) and nutrients critical for nerve healing.

Lithium

Lithium 10 mg 1-2x day for its brain protective properties (found online and in some health food stores). Prescription lithium carbonate 300 mg has 30 mg of lithium a tab (so take 1/3 of a tab 1-2x day).

Other Therapies & Advice

Blood test

Have an IgG and IgM blood test for HHV6 by IFA, and a CMV IgG and IgM (do both at Quest labs). If either IgM is positive, or the IgG for HHV6 virus is 1:320 or higher, or the CMV IgG is 4 or more — I recommend using 6 months of the antiviral Valcyte (discussed in my book From Fatigued to Fantastic!).

EDTA chelation

See a holistic M.D. to look for heavy metal toxicity and consider EDTA chelation.
