Blown Away by Gas and Bloating?

Optimizing Your Health, Part 6: Healthy Digestion (Lower)

Dear Readers,

In last week's newsletter I talked to you about optimizing upper digestion. This week we travel "south" out of the mouth, esophagus and stomach, and down into the small and large intestine — to focus on optimizing the function of your lower digestive tract.

How can you pinpoint the source of your digestive upset? How can you tell if the problem is in your upper or your lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract?

If your symptoms are from your upper GI tract, they usually take the form of acid reflux, a burning sensation in your stomach (and/or solar plexus) and burping.

If they're from your lower GI tract, your symptoms will more likely be gas, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation. And the discomfort is felt lower down in your body — more near the belly button than the solar plexus.

But there's one way lower and upper GI concerns are similar. They're both easy to solve if you know what's causing the problem — and we'll discuss those problems, and their easy solutions, in the rest of this newsletter.

Qigong for Fibromyalgia

Two new studies show that the gentle, meditative exercises of Qigong may help relieve the symptoms of fibromyalgia. In a study published in Arthritis Research & Therapy, researchers saw improvements in "pain … sleep, physical function and mental function." And in anther study conducted at the University of Kansas Medical Center, researchers concluded, "Qigong exercise may potentially be an effective self-management approach in controlling FM symptoms."

Melatonin Helps Seniors Sleep

A new study from researchers at the University of Ottawa shows that supplements of the hormone melatonin may help folks 55 and older fall asleep faster and sleep longer, optimizing healthy sleep. All it takes is 1/2 mg.

Is a Computer a Boy or a Girl?

A student asked, "What gender is the word 'computer'?"

Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether "computer" should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.

The men's group decided that "computer" should definitely be of the feminine gender ("la computadora"), because:

  1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic,
  2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else,
  3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long-term memory for possible later retrieval, and
  4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.

(THIS GETS BETTER!)

The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be masculine ("el computador"), because:

  1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on,
  2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves,
  3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they are the problem, and
  4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model.

The women won.
